Sofa Search

We’re in the market for a sofa (well, I am b/c kyle wouldnt care if we kept the old navy leather overstuffed sectional until the day we die.  have i mentioned that i LOVE the fact that he leaves these decisions up to me???).  The second living area right off the kitchen/living is something I’m very excited about!  I cant totally decide what to use that room for but I’m leaning toward study/library/living.  I have a TON of books- as does Kyle- so we could do a wall of books, a leather (little more serious) sofa, a couple of chairs, and our desk/computer.  I dont want this to be another TV room, so no TV.  The TV will be on the far wall from kitchen in the main living area so that you can see it while cooking and eating.  I see the other living area as more quiet and conversational.

About the new sofa- I’m thinking a lighter camel-ish leather.  I’ve never had a leather sofa, so please give me some pros and cons!  My dream leather sofa is that soft buttery, really worn and broken-in look.  I’m not into the over-stuffed dark ones, especially for this house.  Here are a few examples.

A.  This one is basically my dream sofa.  It is from Room and Board.  I cannot imagine it being any more perfect.  The color… the lines… the simplicity…the tufted back and fixed cushions.  It is my dream.  It is pretty expensive (and by pretty i mean very), but at the same time it is most definitely a lifetime investment piece.  I would ALWAYS keep this sofa, and the more it gets worn and broken in, the better.  Sort of like a perfect pair of camel boots!

B.  Here is a great one from Bassett!  (thanks, Amanda!)  It really is classically beautiful.

C.  This one is from Pottery Barn.  Slightly less expensive, great color, would wear beautifully.  Its a little more traditional, and at first that is a turn-off, but at the same time, maybe not necessarily a bad thing.  I also like that it does not have loose cushions on the back.

D.  This sofa is sort of a cross between the two!  Is is WAAAAAAAAAAY less expensive and can be ordered through Rooms-to-go.  I have never bought anything from there and have heard mixed reviews on their quality.  Does anyone have any experience with them??  Let me know!!!

  1. I love the first one! It just looks like you! Have you tried looking at Bassett? They can be pricey but have a great warranty program and their customer service is excellent. Stay away from Rooms-to-Go. My mom bought an entertainment center from them. When it was delievered she noticed a deep scratch on it. They sent someone to look at it and they wanted to fix the scratch and not replace the item. My mom raised a fit because it was a brand new item that was delievered scratched. They ended up sending her a new one. She made the mistake of buying some bedroom furniture from there as well, without realizing that there are absolutely NO cash refunds. And, it’s up to them if they will let you return something in exchange for another item. Most places will let you return items but charge you a “restocking” fee.

  3. i am SO excited to leave this comment on an open forum. I HATE ROOMS TO GO!!! (that being said, pick the sofa that’s best for you!) BUT…they were jerks about everything! particularly my sales lady, who was so rude that i went to ask the manager that she not receive commission for my sale, then they insisted on charging me for delivery for my ottoman,(which could have even fit in the civic! ugh!), then they have what’s called an “all day delivery” policy, where they don’t tell you when they’ll be delivering said ottomans which did not even merrit a delivery truck, you just have to wait around ALL DAY. THEN, when i got smart and had them delivered to my work so i wouldn’t have to wait around, they KNOCKED THE WROUGHT IRON & BRICK GATE OVER and didn’t fess up to it until i called and complained. true story. I HATE ROOOMS 2 GO! had i not loved my ottoman and searched everywhere for what i wanted, i would not have given them any of my money.

  5. i really like d bc of the color and tufted back. but apparently i’m the only one who’s had a great experience with rooms to go, haha. they were awesome and even went across the store just to add lamps to the room that we wanted so we could see it all together, gave me a lifetime supply of cleaner for our couches (and even give me more when i go to the store), and put together our ottoman for free when it wasn’t part of the delivery. however, you do run a risk by ordering from any, dare i say, cheap, furniture store, but we weren’t wanting pieces we’d take to the grave with us and we’ve been very happy with our couches and ottoman.

  6. Wow. I bought my sleeper sofa from Rooms to Go in Dallas and thought it was awesome. Sales, delivery, online searching, payment…all easy. Sorry, nothing negative to add. It was a great experience and I still love my cranberry overstuffed sofa!

That being said (and I know I don’t get a vote in this sofa discussion)you have some great picks, but I love A the most. And, of course I do – if it’s the most expensive one, somehow that’s usually always my favorite. HA! You have the best taste, though. Whatever you go with will look amazing.

  10. Ashley — A, A, A, A, A! I love it. Such fantastic clean lines. I’m about to read your next post about wing-back chairs, but we got a wing-back chair from Room & Board (Juno); I love their furniture and their service.

This may be a bad thing if you actually like something from here, but we got this sofa from this place in London (we got the Fancy Nancy). May generate some ideas …

  12. i want to get that juno chair for Kyle as his recliner!!! i love it and have been eyeing it for weeks! yay! is it comfortable??

  13. A is so sculptral and elegant! I like it’s long sleek lines and can see how it would dress up a ranch style house. It’s lower back wouldn’t compete with a large window. Also the openess of the legs would allow a rug to sing. But it doesn’t look very dog friendly and can see children turning it into a piece of gymnastics equipment. If it is lower than most sofas, it may not work well in a study.
A sofa with a bowed back like sofa C is nice. It would look great from every angle. And it seems like the leather may be more broken in, which makes me think it would tolerate animals better.
The squared arms of choice B paired with a more warn leather is very interesting.
Down side to B and C, they aren’t as distincive as sofa A. hard choice.

  14. i forgot to mention that we’re a no-dogs-on-furniture household. in fact, our dogs are outside animals except for a few hours at night they can come in. they have never once touched furniture and probably b/c they know i’d strip them of their fur 🙂

i love all these comments!!! i think i may give myself a budget and if i can get 2 funky chairs from a thrift store, and maybe a coffee table, then i can justify sofa “a” 🙂

also- ebay is a GREAT resource for furniture! (especially era-specific)

  15. Ashley — we are big fans of the Juno. Gary wasn’t sure at first, but loves it now. We’re tall people, and it had the deepest seat and highest back of all the chairs we’d looked at (and we’d been looking for about 3 years in two countries.) The “wings” at the top of the chair are great for resting your head against during naps, and it’s perfect for snuggling with Isla. Big fans, big fans.

PS: If you want to come stalk the stoop sales of Brooklyn let me know; you can get pretty good deals there too … 🙂

  16. Oh, and PS our sofa is sort of similar to A (although not in the super yummy caramel leather), and the Juno looks “right” with it.
