The Study/Library/Formal Living Room

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashley Hawthorne @ 3:20 pm

This is what the room looks like now.  As I mentioned in the previous post, this is an extra room off the kitchen/living.  Its pretty large- 350 square feet, and has a huge window to the front yard.  This is also the room that you will enter into if you come to the front door.  That being said, I am thinking cozy, comfortable, conversation, no tv, reading, coffee, magazines, music, glass of wine, etc.  I have never had an “extra” room (seeing that our house is 900 square feet and I have been in apartments before that), so I am especially excited about what will happen here!  Check out the before…

  1. Oh my word — that is my coffee table. And I have a cheap version of the rug from Ikea … I think I love your style. 🙂

  2. that’s hilarious! i love it! i really am digging the gray/elephant color walls paint. its shown peeking out from behind things, and I really will have different art, but this is mostly just a “concept board” per se. im super ready to rip out that dang pink/mauve carpet!

  3. oh! and the fabric for the curtains will be something funky and probably geometric. maybe yellow and white?

  4. I love your grey, too. Grey is so hard — I tried to do grey in our place in London and it came out too blue. Where is the color from? I love Farrow and Ball’s paint. I ended up doing the grey sofa though so I am going to do cream on the walls in my next house — we’re renting now so I can’t paint on a whim … ugh!!!!

  5. grey is hard! We just painted our master bedroom (in the new house) grey and it turned out a little more blue then I thought it would. I still like it though. It has such a soothing feel to it!

  6. regarding gray, i’d say stick with the warmer tones unless you WANT it to be blueish. grays will always be blue when they are in the cool side. a few good options are:

Sherwin Williams “Jogging Path” (SW7638), “Collonade Gray” (SW7641), “Pavestone” (SW7642)

Helpful paint hint! If you want to buy paint from another source, such as Benjamin Moore, you can use a paint chip from ANY company. They will match it. You could even take them a favorite shirt or something and they can match that color (usually)! fun times.

  7. Ashley, regarding your yellow and white geometric print curtains, how do you feel about plantation shutters? Are they too “cottage-y” for more modern styles? Are they “done”? What’s the next thing in windows? Enquiring minds want to know. xx

  8. i dont think plantation shutters will ever “go out.” honestly, they are so great and functional. i would not put them in a really contemporary or modern space. if your house is transitional, i think they will work fine! just make sure to use a pretty contemporary fabric to offset them!

as far as what is the next thing- i am really loving solar shades of every type. keeping the windows as open as possible is great (maybe sheers and a great fabric combo) but there are rooms when more privacy is needed (if your house has a busy streen out front, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.). Solar shades come in a HUUUUGE assortment of colors, but keep it simple! in my office i have white shades that look like this: http://socialspark.com/uploads/socialspark/public/assets/581/solar_shade.jpg

you can specify the opacity depending on if you are just cutting back glare or trying to make it more private.

for you if it’s allright. Could it be simply me or does it seem like a few
of the responses come across as if they are coming from brain dead individuals?
😛 And, if you are posting on other online sites, I’d like to keep
up with everything new you have to post. Would you list of every one of your communal sites like your
twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
